Most people have heard of the menopause. Far fewer have heard of andropause — the gradual hormonal decline that affects men from middle age onwards. It doesn't arrive with the dramatic suddenness of menopause, which is partly why it goes so unrecognised. But its effects on quality of life can be just as significant.
What Is Andropause?
Andropause (sometimes called late-onset hypogonadism) refers to the cluster of symptoms associated with declining testosterone and other hormonal changes in ageing men. Unlike menopause, it's a gradual process — testosterone declines by roughly 1-2% per year from the mid-30s, with symptoms often becoming noticeable in the 40s and 50s.
It's Not Just Testosterone
While testosterone decline is central to andropause, other hormonal shifts contribute:
- DHEA — a precursor hormone that supports testosterone and oestrogen production, declines significantly with age
- Cortisol — the ratio of cortisol to testosterone shifts unfavourably with age and chronic stress
- Oestrogen — yes, men have oestrogen too, and as testosterone declines, the relative proportion of oestrogen can increase, contributing to symptoms
- Melatonin — sleep quality often deteriorates as melatonin production declines with age
Symptoms of Andropause
- Fatigue and reduced stamina
- Low mood, irritability, or depression
- Reduced libido and sexual function
- Loss of muscle mass and increased body fat
- Brain fog and memory issues
- Reduced motivation and drive
- Sleep disturbances
- Reduced bone density
You Don't Have to Accept It
Andropause is real, measurable, and in many cases addressable. A comprehensive male hormone panel — measuring testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, and oestrogen — gives you a clear picture of where your hormones stand and opens the door to informed conversations with healthcare professionals about your options.
Ageing is inevitable. Suffering through it unnecessarily isn't.
